I own and love the original AV40′s. Just purchased a pair of AV30 MKII’s from Amazon and they are going right back. Sound is hideous – hollow and muffled with “one note” bass. What is going on? Is the AV30 that much of a step below the AV40, OR, is the “MKII” a cheapened version of the original?

I cannot over-emphasize the difference. AV40′s are almost a steal for the sound quality – detailed, musical, well balanced. The AV30 MKII were so bad I’d rather hear silence. Que pasa?

One fear I have is that M-Audio may be transitioning to class D amps prematurely (before the technology is ready).
Also I wonder how many of the positive reviews are for the original version rather than mkII.

Please chime in owners of AV30, AV40, original or MKII.

Impressive little set for the money!, July 27, 2011
This review is from: M-Audio Studiophile AV30 MkII Powered Monitor Speakers (Electronics)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What’s this?)

The M-Audio AV30 MKII’s are a very nice little set for the money. No, these may not compete head to head with top of the line systems that cost substantially more, but they are among the nicest I’ve encountered in the sub-$100 price range.

Weight – The first thing you will notice when taking these out of the box is the substantial weight.

Shielded – They are shielded for use around computers/electronics.

Small Footprint – While a tad larger than some, these still take up relatively minimal space on a desk. Comparable to small book shelf speakers in size.

Aux Jack – For those wishing to plug in their mp3 or other devices, these include a handy front accessible jack.

Comes Complete – Includes everything needed to get started…wires, buffer pad that attaches to the bottom (optional) for stability etc… Took less than 10 minutes to remove from box and begin listening.

    Sound

Volume- Now, for the sound. These are NOT the loudest set I’ve encountered; even turned up full volume, they won’t shake the windows or threaten any sound barriers. So, if you are a teen who is interested in nothing more than volume, keep searching. Don’t get me wrong, they fill the room with sound at a volume any normal person would find sufficient but still within the comfortable range.

Quality – Where these really excel is in the quality of the sound. From jazz to classical, rock to folk and everything in between…these provide an impressive clarity for the price range. Getting the balance and setting just right took a couple minutes but overall, the effect is very enjoyable.

    Price
Very nice set for the money. This is my first experience with M-Audio so cannot compare to other options in the same line. However, given the overall quality of this entry level set, I’m quite impressed. Excellent set for this price range!

    Music, Presentations, Other
One item worthy of mention is the ability to use these for creating/mixing etc music and other auditory file given the true to life sound quality and distinct clarify.

    Who Will Enjoy
    - Those searching for overall nice desk top set without breaking the bank.
    - Those that need/want the ability to quickly include mp3 or other aux devices.
    - Those that routinely create presentations, music mix or other audio that requires a clean crisp “true” sound.

Not good speakers., April 8, 2012

I bought the M-audio AV30 MKII powered monitors, and I really would like to save other people from making the same mistake, for so many reasons. The sound quality wasn’t great to begin with, but it was alright. The bass seemed like it was really lacking in most songs. Any song that was really fast or had fast drums sounded muddy. Honestly they are about as good as the factory speakers that came with my desktop, maybe they were a LITTLE bit clearer, but not so much so that they were worth spending $90 on. The clarity noticeably decreases as you increase the volume past a certain point (I don’t mean SUPER loud either). I’ve had these speakers for less than 2 months and they’ve already broken. It started with a crackling in the left speaker, and now the right speaker produces no sound. The support team for M-Audio is a total joke, and I can gaurantee they will NEVER respond to you via email, other than their automated emails. After buying from them you have a small window of time, I believe 10 days, to call customer service. After that you have to purchase a token!!! So if you’re like me and your stuff broke because M-Audio made a bad product, then you actually have to PAY THEM to get them to help you. Terrible customer service. I encourage people to look around on the internet and if you’re going to buy speakers from this company at least go with the original av30s (instead of the MKII’s), or better yet, go with the AV40s.
