Duo Gamer Controller: Great but limited, December 11, 2012

The Duo Gamer controller for the iPad finally brings what all hardcore gamers have wanted for the iPad, a real controller. There are very few positives for this controller other than the fact that it works. But I think in actuality that’s all you really need from a controller for the iPad, to work. It’s initial price point of $80 verged on the edge of lunacy. I think the makers realized that finally and reduced the price to a reasonable $40. Still no bargain, but a must have for any serious mobile gamer.

    +Very responsive
    +Good color scheme
    +Familiar button layout

-Absolutely no ergonomics, just a brick with buttons and joysticks
-Limited to a select few Gameloft games
-Joy sticks are very stiff and somewhat unsual

I’m a huge FPS fan, and a very hardcore console player. Maybe my addiction has taken a bit too strong of a hold when I feel the absurd need that I need to shoot 3D enemies even when I’m not at home. The touchscreen is plain awful for any sort of game that requires two joysticks like an FPS. I in fact refused to play any after buying GTA3 and being so frustrated at attempting to aim at anything. (Killing hookers and running over innocent pedistrians was good enough for me)

This controller is ground breaking. It’s the only controller for any tablet to provide support for FPS, racing, and MMORPG games. But I say that as loosely as possible.

This controller provides support solely for the few Gameloft games listed above. But don’t get me wrong, you are talking about 5 of the greatest games currently available for download on the App Store. Asphalt 7 is a very fun and addicting arcade style racing game. Order & Chaos is the first mmorpg produced for the iPad. And of course the other 3 games are FPS games that are amazing in their own right.

But I still can’t get over the fact I can’t use the controller for all the other games this controller would make so much more fun to play (i.e. GTA3). Even the new Modern Combat 4 doesn’t use the Duo Gamer…. wait what?! Yup, only Modern Combat 3 currently utilizes the Duo Gamer.

The feel of the controller is another major issue. Any Xbox or PS3 player knows the feel of a controller is an art form. That it should fit right with a good size for your hands and a right amount of spacing between all the components.

Art? Please! That’s a load the makers didn’t want to even think about. Put the neccesary buttons on a brick and be done with it. The edges are sharp and uncomfortable. The bottom isn’t even flat for being a box, so laying it on a flat surface gives it this odd wobble. The joysticks are very stiff and are only joysticks in name and have no comparison to 360 or PS3 controller joysticks. There’s a lot of empty space on the controller itself I feel take away from needed button enlargement. The triggers are not really triggers, just oversized buttons. Nothing on this controller is comfortable or quality. Well I shouldn’t say that… I mean the blue light in the center is kinda cool, and the bluetooth connectivity isn’t bad.

Bottom Line: If you’re ok with spending $40 on a controller to play only 5 games, get it and you won’t be disappointed. Just know that going into this purchase you might be spending $40 to play with a controller on just 5 games…

The only way to play games on the iPad!, November 19, 2012

Jan. 29, 2013 Update – The official website for this product says that support for Modern Combat 4 is coming soon!
I am not, nor have I ever been, a hardcore gamer. I’ve played PC games and owned some consoles in the past, but gaming is not my #1 hobby. When I have time, I like to play a game here and there but just don’t have hours and hours of time to sit in front of a TV and play on a console. This is why the great quality games that are coming out for the iPad have been great for me. If I have an extra 10 minutes, I can grab it and play for a while no matter where I am.

My one complaint is that I found controls for first-person shooters to be very difficult to master. Simply put, I hated the interface every time I tried it. I need to feel the controls and buttons with my hands.

The Duo Gamer totally fixes this problem. The controls are laid out like your standard console controller and it’s very easy to use. Setup is a snap. Just pair it with Bluetooth and the games immediately recognize the controller.

You’ll see in some older reviews that Modern Combat 3 does not work with the Duo Gamer. That may have been the case then, but it is not now. MC3 DOES work with the Duo Gamer now and is a blast to play.

My ONLY complaint, like others, is that there are only 5 games that work with this controller right now. I’m not going to worry too much about that yet as MC4 is on the horizon and this product was only released 1-2 months ago. I’m going to give Gameloft the benefit of the doubt that we’ll see more games that work with this controller in the near future.

I will agree that this limited number of games does make the $79 price tag tough (Note, price has since been lowered). I admittedly would probably not have purchased it had I not gotten a gift card and wanted to treat myself.

That being said, I’m glad I did make the purchase. I’m enjoying the heck out of the three FPS games that Gameloft has for this controller.

I would give this 5 stars if there were more games. Otherwise, it’s awesome.

Great for gameloft games! Get it i paid 33., March 29, 2013

I bought it with my sisters account with prime ,came today works well. Comes with a pouch and the stand as seen in the pictures of the product. I find this great for first person shooter games. How ever I’m VERY upset I bought it for 33 now its 14.98 I would have saved $18 for something else I’m saving up for. I give the controller a 8 out of 10 because they need to make most if not all game loft games compatible with it.
